Limerick claim The Shannon Airport Cup in Spain

Ollie Moran inspired his Limerick team to Shannon Airport Cup glory against a Clare side lead by Brian Lohan on the slopes of Costa del Sol recently.

Former hurling All-Stars, Ollie Moran & Brian Lohan went toe to toe at the sun-drenched La Cala Golf Resort recently when 56 golfers teed it up for the 1st annual ‘Shannon Airport Cup’ event over 2 days.

The Shannon Airport Cup incorporated 2 events into 1, with a fourball pairs competition running in conjunction with the overall Clare Vs Limerick event.

The 36 hole event held over both the Asia & Europa Courses at La Cala had the sides deadlocked at 7-7 after day one, with The Banner Men staging a remarkable come back having been 7-2 down as the scores registered on the board. The top match saw the hurling legends pair off against each other with the Limerick pairing of Ollie Moran & Mark O’Riordan getting one over on Brian Lohan & Conor Galvin. Keith Mc Mahon & Tom Ryan added to the lead with a hard-fought victory over Gerry Malone & John Boyce before Sean Donnellan & Declan O’Leary from Dromoland had Clares 1st point on the board.

The scores for day 1 were as follows:

In the race for the pairs title, Limerick duo Tom Carmody & James Doran pictured below shot to the top of the leader-board on day one with a fantastic fourball score of 48 points on the Asia Course and lead by 2 shots overnight from another Limerick pairing Bill Hanley & Des O’Brien with Jenny Cagney & Niamh Whelan from Lahinch GC also in the clubhouse with 46 points.

Day 2, however, belonged to the Limerick side as Bill Hanley & Des O’Brien added a remarkable 48 points on the Europa Course to claim the pairs title and lead the Limerick team home to victory in the main event on a scoreline of 16-12. Most of the matches on Day 2 were extremely tight affairs with some notable results. Cathal O’Reilly & John Meskell held off Lohan & Galvin. Ollie Moran & Mark O’Riordan fought back from 3 points adrift playing the 18th to earn a half point against Colin McNamara & Fintan Ward. The O’Mahony brothers Paul & David, claimed a memorable scalp with Paul sinking a 40ft putt for birdie on the final hole to secure victory over Dromoland duo Darragh McDonagh & John Higgins. Kevin Noonan & Liam Scully had just 2 points to spare against Paul Tuohy & Mark Ward. Raymond & Stephen Twoomey put in 2 steady rounds of 44 & 40 to win 2 points for Limerick and claim 5th place overall.

There were some good victories on the Clare side too with the unbeaten pair of Mike Hickey & Shane Quilligan getting the better of their fellow Shannon GC members, John Culleton & Kieran Considine. The highlight from the Clare perspective was the Hehir brothers, Michéal & Mervin taking out Keith McMahon & Tom Ryan on a score of 44-41, remaining undefeated after 2 days and claiming 2nd place overall in the fourball event.
